Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’

Into the future…” – Steve Miller Band

You’re running out of time. So am I. So is everyone else.

We have this invisible clock within us all, continually ticking down the days until we leave this life. Every day we wake up, there’s a little less time left on this mortality clock. We can’t see this clock, so we don’t know how much time is left before we run out of it. Mortality, folks: it happens to the best of us.

Luckily, we have the means to adjust that clock. Even though we can’t see how much time we have left in life, we can certainly make changes that push back our death date. Forget about the past: by investing in your present habits, I can show you how to buy back the future.

The “O” Word

Let me start by saying this: I’m focusing strictly on obesity here. As the #1 health epidemic in America, it’s kind of a big deal in terms of mortality rates. It’s also my chosen specialty as a trainer and, having lost 100 lbs myself, a topic I’m quite familiar with.

Living with obesity goes way beyond simple appearances. It lends itself to a number of other serious health factors—high blood pressure, type II diabetes, limited mobility, and others. Obesity also increases risks for heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. All of these health factors in our present will rob us of time in our future.

Buying Back Your Future

Here’s the great news about the present—no matter where you stand right now with your physical health, you can add time back on that mortality clock now.

Start small. Pick two new healthy habits and follow them for a month. Add some more habits after that. Here’s some ideas.

Know this: the sooner you start buying back your future, the better you will feel in the long run. Aging gracefully is definitely possible if you take the right approach. Jim Rohn, my late mentor, puts it this way: “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” Look at the comparison up top and ask yourself: which pain do you want to carry in your future?

Baby Steps

I’ll admit that the path can be hard. Buying back your healthy future can take days, weeks, or even longer to start paying off. On the plus side, these are simple changes that we’re talking about. Put one or two of them together, and you can add months to that clock we call mortality. Add three or more together, committing to a lifetime of discipline in following those changes? You’re looking at years of additional healthy living ahead of you.

Make the investment. Do whatever it takes to buy back your future. After all, the only thing you’ve got to lose…is time.

I believe in you.
